On the 19th of October 1958 the inaugural F1 Constructors Championship was won by Vanwall.
The Drivers title was won by Mike Hawthorn in a Ferrari, so ‘honours even’.
Hawthorn had secured the Drivers title by only one point over Stirling Moss.
Vanwall had reached the top of F1 in 1958, eight years from setting out on their mission, with a British-based and owned team and broken the dominance of mainland European teams in the sport.
Since the Vanwall victory, F1 teams based in Great Britain have won more Manufacturers and Drivers titles than teams based in any other country.
Vanwall had led with the creation of a winning mindset that prevails to this day, influencing even the teams with international ownership.
The 19th of October 1958 is a day for all British-based teams to mark with pride.
The Vanwall legacy lives on.
As the official owners of the British-based Vanwall marque with authentic brand heritage going back to the 1950s – “Vanwall we salute you”.
Here’s to Tony Vandervell, his team and above all everyone in F1 back in 1958 and right through to today.
